Embodying Shakti: Kali Ma
Kali is terrifying and intoxicating, magnetic and repulsive. Her dark and fierce visage is portrayed with thirsty tongue, fangs dripping blood, a necklace of human skulls and a skirt of severed arms. Kali calls to our most primal nature – that of the Devouring Mother, who slays demons and eats her own young so that they may be transformed. The enigmatic nature of this visceral and enduring Goddess holds the keys to clearing our personal karmas and egoic attachments, as well as the power to devour the demons of environmental devastation, contaminated food supplies, violence against women and girls, and other problems that plague our time. During this five hour intensive workshop, you will encounter the Goddess Kali in a dynamic and playful blend of storytelling, yoga asana and live drum-guided visual meditation. By embodying Her in the physical (yoga asana) realm, and journeying to meet Her in the metaphysical (guided meditation) realm, you’ll begin to recognize Kali’s powerful energy within and without yourself, as well as start building a personal practice that will keep you connected to this potent feminine force for healing and growth.

In this class we will delve into some of the other aspects of yoga, pranayama, meditation, scriptures and philosophy. For existing teachers, this training will enable you to design a personal practice that informs your teaching AND gives you an edge different from anything you’ve been doing.

Rootism & The Yoga of Relating - The Way of the Rootist

Learn to relate with ourselves by journeying into grace, using gong meditation, percussion, and flow yoga as a warm up. Then we will journey into relating with each other using practices that help us connect at the deepest level of our being and build the prefrontal cortex.

What is Rootism?
As we evolve, we peel away the layers of illusion stemmed by maturity and the teachings from life experiences. If you study and inquire enough, you may find that you begin to see common threads from ancient groundwork linked to modern teachings. You may have even sensed unity at some point.  That is what is beautiful about life - there are multiple levels of exploration unique within each of us. Each layer can reveal a different angle, new areas of focus for growth or potential driven from the main spirit channel – the heart - keeper of our spark.

The Path of Oneness forks many roads & there are infinite possibilities we choose from along the way. We will learn from our experiences.

These learnings ground the ROOTS of our being with deep self-awareness. When we identify and tap into the roots of our beliefs and how we share the hero's journey, we become closer to the truth we seek.

Rootism is the belief that the truth is all around us, just hidden sometimes like a gem in the rough. It is our greatest task to polish and refine new meaning from what we have learned to create a greater vision for ourselves. Jung felt that we leave consciousness, a representation of the root chakra, and eventually delve into the second chakra to explore the unknown in order to face the "monster" and be consumed by it so that a rebirth can happen. We need courage to face the unknown. It takes courage to surrender to the monster, the dark aspect of ourselves.

The first step toward awakening is to explore the roots of all things with great awareness, eyes wide open, to find at the breakthrough, the Phoenix emerges, and our highest Self applauds our new discovery like a happily awaiting friend.

Ultimately there is only ONE truth. It's universal. Unveiling it is the Soul's journey.

Yoga for Metabolic Syndrome – Research and Practice

Topic: Yoga for metabolic syndrome – Research and Practice

Presenter: Smitha Mallaiah, MS

Description:  Metabolic syndrome is the name for a group of risk factors that raises your risk for heart disease and other health problems, such as diabetes and stroke. The syndrome is so named because its interrelated maladies—abdominal obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and insulin resistance—are handcuffed to the body’s metabolism. A person who has three or more of these is considered to have the syndrome. The American Heart Association estimates that 50 million Americans suffer from it, and the number is growing in lockstep with the country’s waistlines. The rising yoga research shows yoga as a very promising practice to manage/cure this malady. Join Smitha Mallaiah for a presentation to learn the background, research and yogic prescription for Metabolic disorders.

The Journey to Heal Your Emotions - El camino hacia la sanacion del alma
Emotions are physical, not psychological and act to bridge our bodies and minds. Psychosomatic means that our bodies, mind, and emotions are intimately intertwined. As we alter the awareness of our emotions, we typically alter our physical state. Managing our emotions is now considered a form of disease prevention. If we heal our emotions, we heal our bodies. Yoga is an ancient, practical system for assessing, healing, and integrating the body and mind. Yoga is much more a state of mind than having to touch your toes.

Empirical Evidence of Integrative Health Usage Among College Students
As complementary and integrative health approaches become integrated in the western medicine, what, if any of these approaches are utilized by college students?  This particular session will review the efficacy of Complementary and Integrative therapies in the Public Health Policy Domain, especially among the college population.
College students often suffer from stress, anxiety, sleep related problems and struggle with substance use and academic performance.  Yoga is being used as a therapeutic intervention for college students by researchers and this literature review focuses on seventy five college-based studies utilizing yoga interventions published in peer–reviewed journals from years 2000 to 2016.  Studies from these publications primarily come from the United States (n=36) and India (n=25).  The review article addresses variation in yoga intervention therapies, mainly method and duration.  Similar to other published research, most of these studies address major limitations and issues with research design and implementation, both of which are important aspects to consider within the growing field of evidence based yoga research.  Regardless, these published studies indicate that use of yoga in the college setting is an important and growing field of research.

Texas Yoga Asana Showcase
Yoga Exhibitions and Yoga Competitions originated in India some 2000 years ago, and were meant to demonstrate and inspire others. Competing and Performing helps many to develop a regular practice, set a goal to strive towards, and to make yoga part of our daily life. The Texas Yoga Asana Showcase is an opportunity to show some yoga moves without the strict rules of a Yoga Championship.

A Yoga Asana demonstration is not a competition over anyone else. It represents the inner battle between the ego and the higher self. The ego that whispers to you to give up and give in – to not risk possible embarrassment or failure. And the higher self that invites you to leave your comfort zone and open yourself to new possibilities that you never imagined were possible. It’s about cultivating a moment of transcendence beyond your doubts and fears. A journey of harnessing your courage.

The Texas Yoga Asana Showcase is an opportunity for those yogis & yoginis, who have a desire to demonstrate and perform their skill level of yoga asanas in a non- competitive setting. This is a win-win opportunity for both the practitioner and those watching, and for popularizing yoga through the demonstration of yoga asanas.

Through each Yoga Asana, one of the eight limbs of yoga, each practitioner explores their own physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional potential, bringing themselves closer to their own self realization.

Today, each Yoga Practitioner will perform a routine/sequence of asanas that demonstrate Strength, Flexibility, Balance. Within each Asana, the practitioner will demonstrate the smooth transition through each pose with Grace, Control of Breath, Internal Stillness, & Focus.

Asana of Mind
Asana of Mind When your mind is pure, everything becomes clear. Just like in an exercise, we can achieve the sharpness in many ways. The mind can be effected through breathing, through sound and vibration. To effect the mind, we would first effect the thoughts. If you ever wondered that if it possible to change the thought patterns at all, this is the chance to find out. Be prepared to meditate like never before and enjoy it. Followed by deep relaxation with the gong.

Poucha-Dass by François Rabbath performed by Renaud Boucher-Browning, Double Bass

Born into a musical family in Aleppo, Syria in 1931, double bass soloist and pedagogue François Rabbath worked in Beirut, Lebanon before emigrating to Paris in the 1950s. His musical career as a self-taught double bassist encompasses the recording studio, jazz café, opera house, and recital stage. Rabbath composed Poucha-Dass in 1968. The Indian Raga system inspired him to compose a piece in which the double bass imitates the distinctive sound of two plucked stringed instruments: the sitar, a melodic instrument with movable frets, and the tanpura, whose open strings provide a drone accompaniment in Hindu music. Throughout Poucha-Dass, the bassist plays against the normal physical aspects of handling the bow by increasing the speed of the arm and by reducing its weight, all while moving the bow close to the bridge to play sul ponticello in order to obtain the high overtones of the low fundamental notes. Poucha-Dass begins with calm, meditative music before transitioning to a driving polyrhythmic dance that intensifies inexorably until its final ascent.

Rabbath recorded Poucha-Dass in two different CDs on MN label « Multibasse » and «François Rabbath: Live Around the World. » Liben Music Publishers originally published Poucha-Dass in 1979 in « Solos for the Double Bassist. » In 2012, the French publisher  « Leduc » released the current expanded version of the piece in the fourth volume of the New Technique for the Double Bass by François Rabbath.

Peach Outreach Fundraiser Class in Honor of Marcy Kurtz (Donation and open to the public)

com·mu·ni·ty

a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

As yogis, we live, love, and practice to explore and build connection with ourselves. But when we practice together, we build that same connection with each other by creating energy and space together. In doing this, we lift each other up and unite as one strong whole spirit! #GoddessesUnite

You can expect a collective flow that will build the connection that we create in practice with each other. The idea of this class is to use our practice to create and build unity with ourselves and the community, sharing more love and light in our world. Bring your best friend, or come join the community and connect with more empowered yogis like you! We are so pleased that we will be having Anthony Rodriguez (Arexpressions) providing the tunes for our event!

Yoga Instructor, Yoga with Raquel
It is said that yoga is the journey of the self through the self. This was very much how my yoga journey has been. My passion for yoga began when I went to class hoping to lose weight and be happier in my own body, but I found so much more than that. Yoga made me want to be better to myself. It helped me to understand that if I did not fill my own cup, I could not properly give to others. I did lose 85 pounds in the beginning of my yoga journey... Read More →
